SEMLA Invites Applications for the SEMLA National MLA Travel Grant

SEMLA invites applicants to apply for the SEMLA National MLA Travel Grant to support travel and hotel expenses to attend the Music Library Association’s annual meeting either in person or virtually. The grant is a cash award of up to $750 plus SEMLA covers Reduced Registration at the national MLA conference, the Student rate, or First-Three-Years Registration. Assistance with technology expenses to enhance applicants’ ability to attend the meeting virtually will also be considered.

Individuals from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

  • To qualify, you must:
    • Be a current library school student aspiring to be a music librarian, or
    • Be in library school by time of conference aspiring to be a music librarian, or
    • Be in the first three years of music library career, or
    • Be in a paraprofessional position for whom working with music materials is a significant portion of responsibilities.
    • Be a member of SEMLA and expected to join MLA by the time of the conference.
  • To apply, you must:
    • Submit a letter of intent explaining why you should be awarded this grant and how you would use the money. Some expenses (i.e., hotel costs) for the conference can be found here: http://conferences.blog.musiclibraryassoc.org/.
    • Submit 1 letter of support.
  • Applicants must state whether they are applying for the Kevin Freeman Travel Grant and/or the MLA Paraprofessional/Public Librarian Conference Travel Grant offered by the Music Library Association. If awarded the SEMLA grant for travel to the national conference, the winning applicant will withdraw from these other two grant pools.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously been awarded the SEMLA Bayne travel grant or the SEMLA national grant.
  • Previous applicants who still qualify are welcome to reapply.
  • In the absence of a qualified candidate, this grant may not be awarded in a given year.

Recipients of the SEMLA National MLA Travel Grant will be notified no later than November 1, 2023. Please note that SEMLA may elect to pay directly for travel and hotel expenses on the recipient’s behalf.
